On a beautiful, breezy and sunny Sunday, May 13, Centralia High School held commencement for the class of 2012. With the western bleachers packed beyond capacity with friends, family and fans, 124 members of the CHS class of 2012 ascended the wooden platform set up a the 50 yard line of Earl Miller Field and received their diplomas from representatives of the R-VI school board. One person was killed when their Honda Accord was struck by a van about 7:15 Friday morning on Route B near Mt. Zion Church Road. Two others were transported from the scene to area hospitals. The names of those involved have not yet been released.

After a 9-6 loss to the Hallsville Indians the Sturgeon Bulldogs won the first two games of the district tournament and played for the championship 7 p.m., May 15, too late to be reported in this week’s edition. As the Anchor Festival draws near, volunteer opportunities abound. Following their May 8 board of directors meeting, chamber director Ginny Zoellers said there were still open slots available for people watching and making new friends. The chamber needs people to staff the three ticket booths during the three-day block party, and the information tent. “We would love more people to get involved,” Zoellers said.
